SUMMARY:Time Travelers - Kids History Summer Camp with Sauk County Historical Society
DESCRIPTION:An exciting and expanded summer kids' camp is coming to the Sauk County Historical Society for students in fourth\, fifth\, and sixth grades! Two weeks of exciting sessions are being planned to explore local history and prehistory during the first two weeks of August. Time travelers will engage in local history through hands-on projects\, mini field trips\, behind-the-scenes tours and engaging lessons. By using maps\, historic photos\, documents\, and artifacts\, participants will solve history mysteries and learn about the people\, events\, and forces that shaped the local community.\n\n \n\nModule 1 will be held on August 3\, 4 and 5 from 9 am to noon each day starting at the History Center or the Van Orden Mansion in Baraboo. Time Travelers will be given a unique map of the Baraboo area made in 1872 that will become a guide to help understand how people have lived along this stretch of the river for thousands of years and why the current community is here. Effigy mounds\, Indigenous people\, fur trading and water power are just some of the topics which will be explored with the help of hands-on activities\, special visitors and tours. Each day\, time travelers will find clues leading up to a treasure hunt at the end of the three-day session.\n\n \n\nModule 2 will be held on Aug 10\, 11 and 12 from 9 am to noon with starting points at the History Center or Van Orden Mansion. This module will build on lessons learned in Module 1 but can also be attended independently. This module will focus on railroads and their impact on the community along with area mining. Other topics will include county government with a special visit to the courthouse and a walking tour of downtown Baraboo to talk about its histories and some of the dramatic events that happened there. As with Module 1\, a treasure hunt will end the three-day session with clues found along the way.\n\nBoth weeks of camp will culminate with a graduation ceremony at a free ice cream social at the Van Orden Mansion on the evening of August 12.\n\n \n\nThis year's Time Travelers Kids' Camp is being supported by a grant from a donor advised fund at the Community Foundation of South-Central Wisconsin. This generous support helps keep the history camp affordable and helps to purchase supplies.\n\n \n\nSpace is limited to 10 students for each Module and the cost for each three-day module is $75 for students whose parent(s) or guardian(s) is a member of SCHS. ($90 for non-members) You can sign up for one or both modules. Please email history@saukcountyhistory.org with any questions or concerns.
