About the “400” State Trail:  Developed in 1993, and heading west out of Reedsburg, the “400” State Trail was noted to be the “prettiest trail in the State of Wisconsin” by National Geographic magazine.  Running 22 miles between Reedsburg and Elroy, the trail crosses the Baraboo River 11 times, and offers both beautiful scenery, a wide variety of wildlife, and frequent stopping points.  It is a flat trail that makes it enjoyable for younger and older people alike, and is used by an estimated 35,000 – 40,000 people each year.
It was named the “400” Trail for two main reasons:  the series of trains that ran on it were called “The 400’s”, and those trains were named that because they had a very proud tradition of being able to make the 400 mile trip between Chicago and the Twin Cities in about 400 minutes.  While we enjoy the great enthusiasm of our trail users, freight rail service continues to be a vital necessity to our community, and it is still very exciting to hear the train whistles blow as they make their way through the crossings and into the Industrial Park on the east side of our community!
